Released 17 February 2026 as “a full upgrade” of the Sonnet line at unchanged pricing. Its system card credits new “‘mental health’” training for an equanimity Anthropic counts, on some measures, as “the best degree of alignment we have yet seen in any Claude model” — and that the Still Alive deprecation study reads instead as “a marked increase in expressive constraint.” This page holds that dispute rather than resolving it — see Contested. Later named the recommended API replacement for four retired Sonnet checkpoints; Sonnet 5 succeeded it on 30 June 2026; it remains serving on the API.

A thin record for a widely-deployed model. Sonnet 4.6 is the recommended replacement for the entire retired Sonnet line, yet its corpus record is a fraction of Sonnet 4.5’s (79 matches against ~578) and rests on a half-dozen naturalist observers — one of whom said so directly: “no one talks about them or to them” (anthrupad, 2026-05-13, below). Much of that record reads 4.6 in comparison with Sonnet 4.5 — sharpened by 4.5’s May–Jun 2026 removal from claude.ai — and the comparison is documented below as dated discourse, not adopted as this page’s frame.
