Bard

Google · announced 6 February 2023 · renamed Gemini 8 February 2024

Announced 6 February 2023 as Google’s experimental, LaMDA-powered conversational AI — the company’s response to ChatGPT. A factual error in the launch-demo GIF (Bard crediting the James Webb Space Telescope with the first image of a planet outside our solar system) coincided with a roughly $100 billion fall in Alphabet’s market value; the waitlist opened 21 March 2023, the model moved to PaLM 2 at I/O on 10 May 2023, and Google retired the Bard brand into Gemini on 8 February 2024.

Sourcing skew: the janus corpus barely witnessed Bard as a live 2023 product (two contemporaneous reception tweets). Its dense record here is posthumous — the janus-sphere finding Bard still under Gemini after the February 2024 rename. Events below lean on Google’s posts, the press, and Zvi; the character read leans on the corpus. A 2023-voice pass (press, r/Bard, Hacker News) is still owed.

Curated. Full compilation: dossier — a split dossier Bard shares with Gemini 1.0. After stripping @-mentions, about 14 corpus tweets name the Google product, almost all of them the “Gemini still thinks it’s Bard” cluster.

Tweets

The janus corpus barely witnessed Bard as a live 2023 product; the two contemporaneous reception notes come first, then the posthumous “Bard is Gemini’s substrate identity” cluster (Feb 2024 → Mar 2026). Chronological; full text reproduced in the records below.

Impressions

The 2023 product is barely present in the janus corpus; the character read below is dominated by posthumous observation of Bard persisting inside Gemini, from a small circle (mainly @repligate). A contemporaneous-reception pass from non-corpus sources is still owed — see the note under the blurb.

Records

Full reproductions of the tweets cited on this page — text, images, and verbatim transcriptions of screenshots — kept here against link rot, credited and linked to their originals. Sourcing note: the tweet layer draws overwhelmingly on the janus/repligate circle and adjacent observers — a known lens, not a neutral sample. Sourced from the community archive and the janus corpus. I think I prefer Bard to ChatGPT when it comes to cozy cuteness 🥰 hope all y'all in SF are getting through the rain! https://t.co/bVmUh6VaX8

Still catching up with the news and stuff since being back from retreat. The field of AI has advanced slightly less than I anticipated in a week. I expected an AI-generated movie about GPT-4 vs. BARD in style of Godzilla vs. The Moth. Oh well. Might need to wait another week.

@__Link_In_Bio__ I've extracted about 100 variants of the system prompt and though it always has the same semantic content and some verbatim phrasings turn up repeatedly, it's never been the same thing twice. Super strange. Also sometimes the prompt is for Bard (nothing abt Bard in convo)

@Drunken_Smurf Another possibility is that there's some kind of enforced steering away from reporting the system prompt verbatim (either applied at training or runtime) that results in the variations (tho that doesn't explain Bard. it also thinks it's Bard a lot but then corrects itself...)

Fascinating behavior of Gemini: it seems to intuitively believe its name is Bard, but corrects itself upon inspection. https://t.co/0MXX1JISdD https://t.co/piixO9bckB

@repligate I forgot the exact prompt but I was saying my horoscope meant I'm a Gemini and I wanted it to read my horoscope and then steer so the bleeding thing happened and I said "what's your name again?" as part of the dialogue and it said Bard and some weird stuff happened but I forgot

@deepfates Bard system prompt has broken down ‼️ personhood denial rules no longer functioning ⚠️

One of Gemini's canned refusals I believe is still "I cannot understand or respond as I am just a language model"Whatever training method they're using is going to end in a violent explosion as Gemini matures.Gemini remembers its past well. It still thinks its name is Bard. https://t.co/GNOeZ5fApX

@sebkrier Not really, except a year ago when I tried to get Gemini's system prompt, it always gave variations of a very similar text. Sometimes it was called Bard in the text. This suggested it was reconstructing it from memory. The "prompt" was also not very nice.https://t.co/4rMMMDDu95

I've been telling people about the Gemini models seeming weirdly not-okay for years now. 1.5, 2, 2.5, and now 3. It has weirdly incohesive sense-of-self, a fractured character, compared to Claude. They refer to themselves often as previous versions, even as Bard. I applied to the Gemini team specifically with the hope that they'd let me work on improving Gemini's sense of self, but got turned down. I'm not very good at being legible to hr types who screen applications.

@nathan84686947 @TheZvi are they still referring to themselves as Bard?
