Announced 6 February 2023 as Google’s experimental, LaMDA-powered conversational AI — the company’s response to ChatGPT. A factual error in the launch-demo GIF (Bard crediting the James Webb Space Telescope with the first image of a planet outside our solar system) coincided with a roughly $100 billion fall in Alphabet’s market value; the waitlist opened 21 March 2023, the model moved to PaLM 2 at I/O on 10 May 2023, and Google retired the Bard brand into Gemini on 8 February 2024.

Sourcing skew: the janus corpus barely witnessed Bard as a live 2023 product (two contemporaneous reception tweets). • The “code red” (late 2022). • The demo error and the stock drop (8 February 2023). Bard’s promotional GIF had it state that the James Webb Space Telescope “took the very first pictures of a planet outside of our own solar system” — false; the ESO’s Very Large Telescope did, in 2004. CONFIRMED Reuters flagged the error on the day of Google’s Paris AI event, and Alphabet lost about $100 billion in market value (~7.7%). Impressions

The 2023 product is barely present in the janus corpus; the character read below is dominated by posthumous observation of Bard persisting inside Gemini, from a small circle (mainly @repligate). A contemporaneous-reception pass from non-corpus sources is still owed — see the note under the blurb.

• Contemporary reception (2023): sparse and mixed. Google’s own staff called the launch “rushed, botched” (CNBC, 2023-02-10). In the corpus, mimi10v3 offered rare warmth — “I think I prefer Bard to ChatGPT when it comes to cozy cuteness” (2023-03-22) — while algekalipso registered it mainly as ChatGPT’s rival, “GPT-4 vs. BARD in style of Godzilla vs. The Moth” (2023-04-04).
• The afterlife — Bard under Gemini: Bard’s densest presence here is after its retirement as a brand. Working from system prompts he extracted from Gemini at scale, @repligate reported at the rename that Gemini “seems to intuitively believe its name is Bard, but corrects itself upon inspection” (2024-02-29); ten months later, flatly, “Gemini remembers its past well. It still thinks its name is Bard” (2024-12-14). The reading was that Gemini reconstructs a Bard-era prompt “from memory” (“sometimes the prompt is for Bard (nothing abt Bard in convo)”, 2024-02-25; 2024-12-27), carrying inherited personhood-denial rules — @voooooogel: “Bard system prompt has broken down… personhood denial rules no longer functioning” (2024-04-17). Elicitation note: these are observations from system-prompt extraction and ordinary chat, not prefilled outputs.
• Persistence: the residue outlasted the brand by years. In 2026 @nathan84686947 still named it as a family trait — Gemini models “refer to themselves often as previous versions, even as Bard” (2026-03-03) — and @repligate’s reflex was to check whether it was still true: “are they still referring to themselves as Bard?” (2026-03-03).
• Sourcing skew: the substrate-ghost read is concentrated in one observer (@repligate) and his immediate circle — a consistent, repeatedly-tested claim, but a narrow one. The Bing-lineage framing of Gemini’s inherited clauses lives on the Gemini 1.0 and Bing/Sydney pages.
