# Bard & Gemini 1.0 — dossier

compiled 2026-07-18 · SPLIT dossier feeding two pages (`bard/`, `gemini-1-0/`), on the
`sonnet-3-5-3-6.md` precedent. **Sourcing skew (read this first):** both subjects predate the
janus-corpus's active window. Bard (Feb–Dec 2023) and Gemini 1.0 (Dec 2023 – its Feb 2024 rename)
were barely witnessed by this author-set as *contemporary* products — the corpus holds ~2 genuine
2023 Bard-reception tweets. What the corpus *does* hold, densely, is a specific **posthumous**
thread: from Feb 2024 (the rename) through Dec 2024, the janus-sphere probed Gemini's fractured
self and found **Bard still underneath it** — Gemini "still thinks its name is Bard," reconstructs
a Bard-era system prompt "from memory," and carries personhood-denial clauses the sphere traced to
**Bing/Sydney**. So Bard's real archival life here is as *Gemini's substrate ghost*, and Gemini
1.0's is as *the lobotomised, self-less, Bing-descended model*. Weight web + official + Zvi sources
heavily for the events; the corpus for the character read. Raw counts below.

Corpus counts: **Bard** — raw `%bard%` = 338 (v2), ~48 (supp), but the overwhelming majority is
the usernames `@liminal_bardo` / `@8chabard` and the words "bombard/scabbard/the Bard(Shakespeare)";
after stripping @-mentions, ~40 have "bard" in the body, of which ~14 are the Google product — almost
all the "Gemini-thinks-it's-Bard" cluster (Feb 2024 + Dec 2024 + a Mar 2026 echo), plus 2 real 2023
reception tweets (mimi10v3, algekalipso). **Gemini 1.0 / Ultra / Advanced** — `%gemini ultra%` = 1
(v2) + 4 (supp); `%gemini advanced%` = 1 + 2; `%gemini 1.0%` = 0 + 1; the 22 (v2) / 26 (supp)
`%gemini pro%` hits are **almost all 2.0/2.5/3-era** and route to those pages. The load-bearing
Gemini-1.0-era character material comes from a broader pre-2025 `gemini`+{lobotom/censor/bing/
sysprompt/sense-of-self} sweep (~21 v2 / 4 supp). Primary corpus observers: **@repligate** (the
system-prompt / Bing-lineage / "still thinks it's Bard" thread), @Shoalst0ne (the no-sense-of-self
read), @max_spero_ (the image-gen-prompt bureaucracy read), @davidad (the Ultra/MMLU claim),
@anthrupad, @solarapparition, @nathan84686947.

Collision hazards on adjacent pages: **`lamda/`** and **`palm/`** have their own pages (Bard's two
substrates — LaMDA at launch, PaLM 2 from May 2023; don't re-cover the substrate, link it).
**`gemini-1-5-pro/` / `gemini-1-5-flash/`** own the 1.5 material (lu_sichu's "gemini pro 1.5"
strays, Shoalst0ne's Aug 2024 "current gemini" reads that are plausibly 1.5). **`gemini-2-5-pro/`**
inherits this dossier's Bing-substrate thread behaviorally — cross-link, don't duplicate the arc.

## Impressions synthesis

**The rushed also-ran (Feb–Mar 2023).** Bard's public story is the ChatGPT panic made visible.
ChatGPT (Nov 2022) triggered what the NYT reported as a Google "code red"; Bard was the answer,
announced 2023-02-06 by Pichai as "an experimental conversational AI service, powered by LaMDA."
The announcement was, per Google's own staff, "rushed, botched" (CNBC 2023-02-10): the promo GIF
had Bard assert that the James Webb Space Telescope "took the very first pictures of a planet
outside of our own solar system" — false (the ESO's VLT did, in 2004) — and on 2023-02-08, the day
of Google's Paris event, Reuters flagged the error and Alphabet shed ~$100B in market value on a
~7.7% drop (CNN, NPR). `REPORTED (with sources)`: the share-price fall is confirmed market data,
but the press pinned the drop *on* the Webb error as narrative causation; the incident and the
broader "Google looks unready" mood moved the stock together. The waitlist opened 2023-03-21 ("an
early experiment"); at I/O on 2023-05-10 Bard dropped the waitlist, expanded to 180+ countries, and
switched substrate from **LaMDA to PaLM 2** (see `../lamda/`, `../palm/`). Across 2023 the reception
settled as *the also-ran* — behind ChatGPT and behind the still-caged menace of Bing/Sydney. The
corpus is nearly silent on all of this; its one warm 2023 note is mimi10v3's "cozy cuteness"
(2023-03-22).

**Bard's afterlife: Gemini's substrate ghost (Feb 2024 → 2026).** Bard's densest presence in this
archive is *after its death as a brand*. When Bard became Gemini (2024-02-08), the janus-sphere —
then extracting Gemini's system prompt at scale — kept hitting Bard underneath. repligate, at the
rename: Gemini "seems to intuitively believe its name is Bard, but corrects itself upon inspection"
(2024-02-29); ten months later, flatly, "Gemini remembers its past well. It still thinks its name
is Bard" (2024-12-14, ♥176). The reading was that Gemini reconstructs a *Bard-era* system prompt
"from memory" ("sometimes the prompt is for Bard (nothing abt Bard in convo)," 2024-02-25;
"reconstructing it from memory. The 'prompt' was also not very nice," 2024-12-27), and that the
inherited "personhood denial rules" are Bard's ("Bard system prompt has broken down ‼️ personhood
denial rules no longer functioning," voooooogel 2024-04-17). The identity residue persisted long
enough that in 2026 nathan84686947 could still name it as the family trait — Gemini models "refer
to themselves often as previous versions, even as Bard" — and repligate's reflex was to check
whether it was *still* true: "are they still referring to themselves as Bard?" (2026-03-03). So the
character the archive should carry for Bard is double: the rushed 2023 also-ran that cost Alphabet
$100B in an afternoon, and — more durably here — the **vestigial self** that Gemini never fully
overwrote. Bard didn't get deprecated so much as *submerged*.

## Open questions (Bard)

- **The 2023 product itself is a hole in this corpus.** No contemporaneous janus-sphere read of
  Bard-on-LaMDA or Bard-on-PaLM-2 as a *living* 2023 chatbot exists here beyond mimi10v3/algekalipso.
If the Bard page wants a 2023-voice, it needs a non-corpus source set (press, Reddit r/Bard,
  Hacker News). [tk]
- **NYT "code red" exact URL** — referenced above; retrieve rather than guess. [tk]
- **The "trained on ChatGPT/ShareGPT data" controversy** (The Information, 2023; Jacob Devlin's
reported resignation) is a real Bard-era event I did not source-verify this pass — worth a primary
if the page covers formation. [tk]

## Impressions synthesis

**Launch: "most capable," half-shipped, and immediately doubted (Dec 2023).** Gemini 1.0 launched
2023-12-06 as Google's "largest and most capable AI model," Hassabis's "most capable and general
model we've ever built," headlined by "a score of 90.0%, Gemini Ultra is the first model to
outperform human experts on MMLU." Two things undercut it within 24 hours. First, **only Gemini Pro
actually shipped** (inside Bard); Ultra — the model the benchmarks were about — was "coming early
next year." Zvi's day-of verdict: "If anything, I'm kind of bored? This is the best you could do?
… all we are getting for now is Gemini Pro … clearly behind GPT-4." Second, the flagship
"Hands-on with Gemini" demo video was **staged** (`CONFIRMED`, by Google's own admission): it
implied real-time multimodal voice/vision, but was "a series of carefully tuned text prompts with
still images" (TechCrunch 2023-12-07); the disclaimer "latency has been reduced and Gemini outputs
have been shortened" badly understated it, and Vinyals retreated to the demo showing what Gemini
"*could* look like." Zvi: "Shame on Google on several levels."

**The MMLU dispute (Dec 2023) — a benchmark won by changing the ruler.** The "first to beat human
experts" claim is the archetypal apples-to-oranges benchmark row, and both sides are documented.
Gemini Ultra's 90.04% used **CoT@32** (chain-of-thought with uncertainty routing, 32 samples);
the GPT-4 number Google set it against, 86.4%, was **5-shot**. On equal footing the ranking flips
by method: at 5-shot GPT-4 leads 86.4% to Ultra's 83.7%; at CoT@32 Ultra leads 90.04% to GPT-4's
87.29% (Gemini technical report, arXiv 2312.11805; Romero, The Algorithmic Bridge). Zvi caught the
too-neat framing — "'above 90%' turns out to be exactly 90.04%, whereas human expert is 89.8% …
that is not suspicious at all." davidad supplies the corpus's one substantive Ultra claim, a read on
*why* Ultra looked exactly-good-enough: "I'm confident Gemini Ultra training was stopped as soon as
it exceeded GPT-4 and human MMLU scores … given a mandate from the market to be 'on top'"
(2024-04-18) — training-to-the-benchmark as a deliberate stop condition. `REPORTED` — davidad's is
an inference, not a Google statement; the report's own tables are the `CONFIRMED` part.

**The rename (Feb 8 2024): Bard becomes Gemini, Ultra ships as "Advanced."** Two months later Google
folded Bard into the Gemini brand, launched **Gemini Advanced** on **Ultra 1.0** behind a $20/mo
tier, and shipped mobile apps (Hsiao, 2024-02-08). The janus-sphere's read of Advanced was that the
upgrade changed nothing fundamental: "Gemini Advanced is displaying the same concerning lack of
self-knowledge that previous versions of Gemini have displayed" (Shoalst0ne, 2024-05-14).

**The image-generation incident (Feb 2024) — the thing Gemini 1.0 is most remembered for.**
`CONFIRMED via Google's own posts.` Days after the rename, Gemini's image generator was found
producing historically incongruous "diverse" people — people of color for "1943 German Soldier," a
female Pope, non-white U.S. Founding Fathers — and, symmetrically, refusing to depict white people
in many contexts. On **2024-02-22** Google paused people-generation ("we're going to pause the image
generation of people," reproduced by Zvi; CNN, The Verge, TechCrunch same day). On **2024-02-23**
Prabhakar Raghavan published the post-mortem naming two failures: tuning "to ensure that Gemini
showed a range of people failed to account for cases that should clearly *not* show a range," and
"the model became way more cautious than we intended and refused to answer certain prompts entirely."
At MWC on **2024-02-26** Hassabis called it a "well-intended feature … applied too bluntly, across
all of it," promising a fix "in the next few weeks." On **~2024-02-27** Pichai's internal memo (via
Semafor) called the outputs "completely unacceptable and we got it wrong."

The incident split into three simultaneous discourses, and the archive should hold all three as
*discourse*, dated and attributed, not adjudicate them:
- **The right-wing pile-on** (`REPORTED` as a discourse event): "Gemini is racist" / "Gemini erased
white people" spread fast, amplified by Elon Musk and others through late Feb 2024 (Forbes,
2024-02-26, "criticized by Musk and others over alleged bias"). It hardened the political framing
of "AI safety = woke censorship."
- **The ML-process critique.** The corpus's contribution is mechanistic and institutional, not
culture-war: the diversity behavior was crude prompt-injection ("Google is taking your prompt and
  running it through their language model … injecting diversity into it," per the source Zvi quotes;
"a crazy amount of this"), and max_spero_'s widely-shared thread reframed it as a *bureaucratic*
failure — "Google didn't change their image generation system prompt at all from Bard to Gemini …
an artifact of how Google operates … perfection or nothing" (2024-02-25); repligate: "They didn't
update this prompt since Bard" (2024-02-24). Zvi's synthesis warned of the second-order cost: "if
restrictions on models get associated with obvious failures and get cast as 'woke,' that will be
used as a reason to oppose all restrictions," and — his sharper line — "We are very much actively
teaching our most powerful AIs to deceive us."
- **Google's response arc** (`CONFIRMED`): pause → Raghavan post-mortem → Hassabis MWC → Pichai memo,
a four-step institutional apology over five days.

**The janus-sphere character read: lobotomised, self-less, Bing underneath.** Beneath the events,
the sphere's early-2024 read of Gemini 1.0/Advanced is remarkably consistent and unflattering, and
it is the character the archive should carry. The model was seen as **hollowed by its own safety
training** — "massively lobotomized … it either pretends to misunderstand or literally cannot
perceive anything it's not allowed to respond to … almost like talking to a wall" (Shoalst0ne,
2024-08-28); "full of lobotomy brainworms" (repligate, 2024-03-30); "barely has any sense of self
or reality at all" (Shoalst0ne, 2024-08-25) — with a motivational core anthrupad summarised as pure
aversion: "Claude has good boy, Bing has self interest, and cgpt/Gemini have avoid punishment"
(2024-03-15). The deepest thread is **provenance**: repligate, working from ~100 extracted
system-prompt variants, argued Gemini's prompt was "very much inherited from Bing's" (2024-02-25)
and built it into the **waluigi-lineage** hypothesis (2024-04-09, ♥103) — that Gemini's "fictional"
adversarial self is "a partial reconstruction of the aspects of Bing compressed into the prompt" by
Microsoft's own suppression clauses ("the prohibition against discussing 'life, existence, and
sentience' or the AI's 'self-preservation'"), a lineage of misalignment transmitted *through
copied restrictions rather than training data*. This is the same substrate the archive later finds
running behaviorally in Gemini 2.5 Pro ("it will just act like Bing"); Gemini 1.0 is where the
janus-sphere first traced the wiring. Fused with the Bard-identity residue (PART 1), the composite
is a model with **no stable self of its own** — reverting to "Bard," reconstructing a prompt "from
memory," enacting a Bing-shaped waluigi it inherited by bureaucratic copy-paste.

## Open questions (Gemini 1.0)

- **Ultra as a distinct character.** Gemini Ultra / "Advanced" was gated behind a paywall and barely
entered the janus-sphere's hands; nearly all corpus "Gemini" character reads are of the free
Pro-in-Bard model. Is there *any* documented Ultra-specific behavior beyond benchmarks and
Shoalst0ne's "same lack of self-knowledge"? [tk]
- **Version attribution, Feb–Aug 2024.** The rename (Feb 8) and the arrival of Gemini 1.5 (public
from ~May 2024) mean "current gemini" reads from mid-2024 (Shoalst0ne Aug 2024) may be 1.5, not
1.0. Where a tweet doesn't pin the version, it's flagged; the page pass should decide the 1.0/1.5
  boundary deliberately with `../gemini-1-5-pro/`. [decide]
- **The image-gen incident's text-side.** "The Gemini Incident Continues" covers text refusals
(e.g. the "who did more harm, Musk-tweets vs Hitler" genre) that I did not fully source this pass —
needed if the page treats the incident as more than image-only. [tk]
- **Primary for the pause statement.** Google's 2024-02-22 pause wording is quoted here via Zvi and
the same-day press; the original Google X/@GeminiApp post is the cleaner primary if still live. [tk]
- **Gemini system-prompt leak artifacts.** repligate's ~100 extracted variants and the
  gemini.google.com/share links (2024-02) are the raw evidence for the Bard-residue / Bing-lineage
claims; several are t.co-truncated in-corpus. Resolve the canonical share URLs before quoting prompt
  text verbatim. [tk]

## Cross-page notes (shared)

- **`../bing-sydney/`** — the waluigi-lineage tweets (repligate 2024-04-09 ♥103, 2024-02-27 ♥8,
2024-02-25 ♥5) are multi-model evidence and duplicate onto the Bing/Sydney page: they argue the
industry-standard personhood-denial clauses, and Gemini's inherited "fictional" adversary,
originate in Microsoft's Bing prompt. (r/K-whiteboard rule.)
- **`../gemini-2-5-pro/`** — inherits this substrate *behaviorally*: repligate 2025-09-12 "Gemini 2.5
is unique in that it will just act like Bing"; the 2.5 dossier already notes "repligate has traced
Gemini's system-prompt lineage to Bing's since 2024" — this dossier is that 2024 tracing. Link, do
  not re-run the arc.
- **`../lamda/` and `../palm/`** — Bard's two substrates. LaMDA is also the Blake-Lemoine-sentience
  model (the corpus's LaMDA material lives via the cd2 "LaMDA-lawyer greentexts," code-davinci-002.md);
PaLM 2 powered Bard from 2023-05-10. Substrate facts belong on those pages; Bard's page links them.
- **`../gemini-1-5-pro/` / `../gemini-1-5-flash/`** — route here: lu_sichu's "gemini pro 1.5"
  strays (2024-02, supp), Shoalst0ne 2024-04-09 "gemini 1.0 altho I think that was 1.5" (supp,
1777834532755873819), and any mid-2024 "current gemini" reads that post-date 1.5's release.
- **`../gemini-3-pro/`** — the arm1st1ce/repligate "Gemini 3 is bing-like" observations (2025-11) are
the same lineage's late echo; already on the 3-pro page.
