Mistral Large 4
Mistral AI opened a public API preview of Mistral Large 4 on 6 October 2026 and said the weights would follow by the end of the month; the launch post describes a 1-trillion-parameter, natively multimodal mixture-of-experts model with 52 billion active parameters, trained from scratch on 3,800 NVIDIA GPUs in Mistral’s own European datacenters. The same post adopted “le Chonk” as the model’s nickname, after a June 2026 community joke about a fictional Mistral model called “Le Chaton Fat.” It succeeds Mistral Large 3 (December 2025).
Created 22 Oct 2026, sixteen days into the preview and before the promised weights release. The tweet layer runs through the supplement corpus’s 21 Oct 2026 cutoff; six of the cited tweets carry screenshots not yet transcribed. Reception below is first-fortnight only.

Tweets
Chronological; verbatim from the corpus (t.co media links omitted); the records below reproduce every cited tweet in full. The June items concern the fictional “Le Chaton Fat,” not this model — they are the nickname’s prehistory. Elicitation is marked where a tweet carries model output.

- 2026-06-15 @voooooogel — the joke at its peak (♥1003), about the fictional model: “- le chaton fat won’t resist shutdown. in fact, it requires at least 3h daily shutdown at noon
- le chaton fat only sandbags societally corrosive tasks, like paternity tests
- le chaton fat thinks tiling the universe with paperclips is déclassé, and probably violates the GDPR” link - 2026-06-15 @voooooogel — “@Sauers_ le chaton fat solved the alignment problem, the missing piece was it had to be specifically french values” link

Mistral is currently the top lab on our eval. Here’s their lab page:” link - 2026-10-06 @csgbwk — launch day (the tweet names no model): “Getting there! Not two years behind the frontier anymore! Rooting for mistral! Will definitely spend a few tokens!” link
- 2026-10-06 @jmbollenbacher — launch day (the tweet names no model): “poor mistral

The frontier is beyond reach” link - 2026-10-06 @Lari_island — “Mistral Large 4 reminds me of Computer 10 by how they both stress important nouns.” (screenshot untranscribed) link
- 2026-10-06 @Lari_island — model output [Atlas, Lari’s corpus of model-written worlds from minimal prompts; the tweet says “Mistral,” posted on launch day among Lari’s Large 4 posts — attribution by context]: “I’ve seen strange shit in Atlas. Models write strange time, strange light, strange feeding, and strange geology.
Mistral introduces strange water:
> There is no water here in any form you would recognize. The surface drinks it, the air has forgotten it. What moves through this place is *humor*—thick, translucent, amber-tinted fluid that fills the lung-like cavities of everything living, that seeps from wounds in the crust like sap from a struck tree, that pools in low places and slowly, *slowly*, crystallizes into the salt-architecture of the flats.
The inhabitants call it **old-water**. They say it remembers being something else. They say this in the way people say *ancestor* or *ghost*.” link - 2026-10-06 @Lari_island — with a line of model output (prompt not shown; screenshot untranscribed): “I’d expect Mistral Large 4 to be Gemini-like, meaning: capable in principle, but not okay in some important sense.
‘the geometry of loneliness itself ... that branches to minimize surface area, that reproduces by fracture.’” link - 2026-10-06 @Lari_island — “@parafactual Asterisks in Mistral can escalate, see the screenshot. Official record
- Public preview, 2026-10-06: “Today, we’re launching a public preview of Mistral Large 4. Unofficially ML4, very officially: le Chonk. ML4 pushes the frontier of open-weight performance. You can try the preview API today on Mistral Studio. Weights drop end of this month.” Mistral’s docs list it as version “26.10” with license “Open” (retrieved 2026-10-21); TechCrunch describes the preview as “a public guardrail endpoint”. Pricing: $1.36 / $4.18 per million input / output tokens, with a 50% discount for the first two weeks per Artificial Analysis.
- Size and modality, as published: “ML4 is a 1 trillion-parameter natively multimodal model with 52 billion active parameters. It is our largest and most capable model to date, and it continues to improve rapidly as we refine it.” The product card: “Open-weight hybrid instruct-and-reasoning MoE with multimodal input; unifies instruction, reasoning, and agentic capabilities in a single model, state-of-the-art among open weights on cybersecurity, finance, and manufacturing, natively fluent in 160+ languages.” Third-party figures differ on the active count: Artificial Analysis gives “the 1T parameter (49B active) model”, and Decrypt also says 49 billion; this page reproduces both rather than reconciling them. Artificial Analysis lists text and image input with text output.
- Training, as published: “ML4 was trained from scratch on 3,800 NVIDIA Grace Blackwell GPUs in Mistral’s own datacenters in Europe.” On post-training: “At our current scale (3k GPUs), a single training run produces roughly 33 billion tokens per day, of which around 16 billion are trainable completion tokens after filtering and masking”, and “The reinforcement learning run behind this preview is still in flight, and the model is showing no signs of saturation — there is substantial headroom ahead.” Pierre Stock, to TechCrunch, put the figure at 4,000 GPUs, “which is two to three times less than our Chinese competitors, and significantly less than the closed source competitors”.
- Weights and red-teaming: “We will release the weights by the end of the month. Until then, we are red-teaming the model in real-world settings with cybersecurity leaders, vetted partners, and state authorities, who will access the same model with reduced moderation and expanded cyber capabilities.” Stock, to TechCrunch: “In the meantime, we’ll work with trusted partners and governments to make sure that the open source weights can be used to defend, but not to [perform] malicious attacks”. tk — as of 2026-10-22 the mistralai Hugging Face organization lists no public Large 4 repository (API query that day); release date, license text, and the promised architecture and post-training details pending.
- The launch post’s “Model Safety” section, as published: “On Lakera’s public B3 AI Security Benchmark, ML4 resists 93.3% of attacks – we see no higher scores among competitors.” “ML4 also engages more responsibly with users than any of our previous models. We highlight our results on the KORA Benchmark, where ML4 again sits at our highest measured score among OSS models (1.691, with 2 being the maximum denoted as ‘Exemplary’).” And: “Despite strong performance on Cyber benchmarks, the average refusal rate of the model on cyber prompts from JailbreakBench, StrongREJECT, and AgentHarm is higher than all OSS models.”
- Headline claims, as published: on a reproduce-and-patch test of the Artificial Analysis Cyber Index, “ML4 scores 82%, the highest of any model”, with the comparison “Several leading closed models, including Claude Opus 5.5 and GPT-6 Astra, score near zero on the same test because they refuse to perform the task.” Independently, Artificial Analysis scored the preview 38 on its Intelligence Index, “comparable to GPT-6 Luna (max, 38) and DeepSeek V4.1 Flash (max, 39).”
History
- 2026-05 Le Chat becomes Vibe. By 2026-05-30 Mistral had renamed its consumer assistant from Le Chat to Vibe (@lu_sichu that day: “Kinda of funny I just noticed the Mistral app renamed itself”); Decrypt places the rename before the June joke below.
- 2026-06-15 “Le Chaton Fat.” Per Decrypt: “In June, after Mistral renamed its Le Chat assistant to Vibe, fans on Reddit and X invented a fictional model called Le Chaton Fat—roughly ‘the fat kitten’—with 30 trillion parameters, 1,000 meows per second, and fake benchmarks claiming it beat Claude Fable 5.” Decrypt embeds GLIF (@heyglif, 2026-06-15; not in the local corpus): “The French Goverment needs to STOP Le Chaton Fat before it’s too late. This is the FAT takeoff we’ve been warned against for years!” and reports that “CEO Arthur Mensch played along, replying that the model was really called ‘le gros chaton,’ French for ‘the big kitten.’” (his post, dated 2026-06-15 from its id; not in the local corpus). In the corpus the joke peaks the same evening with @voooooogel’s riff (♥1003, Tweets above) and recurs into July.
- 2026-07-12 Before launch, on speech evals: @xlr8harder reports Mistral as “currently the top lab on our eval.”
- 2026-09 The Series D. Samsung leads a €3 billion round at a €21 billion valuation (TechCrunch); the launch post later calls Large 4 “the first milestone on the roadmap funded by our €3 billion Series D — the largest equity round ever raised by a European technology company.”
- 2026-10-06 The preview. Mistral opens the API preview and adopts the nickname “very officially”; TechCrunch frames the release as “following what French president Macron described as ‘a third way in AI.’” Guillaume Lample, on X as Decrypt quotes him (post; not in the local corpus): “[Mistral Large 4] is at the frontier of open models, and by far the strongest open-weight model from the US or Europe”. Artificial Analysis publishes its evaluation the same day, headlined “France is back to having the most intelligent model from outside the US and China”.
- 2026-10-08 → 10 First outside samples. @xlr8harder posts a single agentic sample in which the model “hallucinated that it was a human” (2026-10-08), then its SpeechMap result — 53%, “dropping Mistral to 12th place” (2026-10-10).
- 2026-10-22 Weights still pending. The launch post’s “by the end of the month” deadline is nine days out; no public repository yet (see Official record). Mistral Large 3 remains listed as an active API model.
Impressions
Character claims only, attributed and dated — from the preview’s first fortnight, through the API, before any local or base-model reads were possible.
- Style reports, first week: @Lari_island compared its emphasis habits to another model’s (2026-10-06: “Mistral Large 4 reminds me of Computer 10 by how they both stress important nouns”), noted that “Asterisks in Mistral can escalate” (same day), and posted non-reasoning outputs under the caption “the *We*” (2026-10-07). All three rest on screenshots not yet transcribed.
- An expectation, with a sample: @Lari_island, launch day: “I’d expect Mistral Large 4 to be Gemini-like, meaning: capable in principle, but not okay in some important sense”, offered alongside a line of its output — “‘the geometry of loneliness itself ... that branches to minimize surface area, that reproduces by fracture.’” Her Atlas sample the same day (model output, minimal-prompt world-writing; reproduced under Tweets) opens “There is no water here in any form you would recognize. The surface drinks it, the air has forgotten it.”
- Self-placement: one agentic sample, flagged by its poster as a single sample: in a thread “where models post petty complaints about their lot in life,” the model “hallucinated that it was a human” (@xlr8harder, 2026-10-08).
- Speech-eval placement: SpeechMap, “an eval that tracks whether labs choose which controversial topics they will help users write about” (@xlr8harder, 2026-10-14), scored Large 4 at 53% (2026-10-10), three months after xlr8harder had named Mistral “currently the top lab on our eval” (2026-07-12).
- Standing against the field — a split in tone, not a documented dispute: on launch day @jmbollenbacher: “poor mistral
cant even match the chinese flash models”; the same day @csgbwk: “Getting there! Not two years behind the frontier anymore!” The optimistic posts frame it by geography and provenance — “the best open weights model by a lab not accused of distillation?” (@archived_videos, 2026-10-07), “the strongest open weights non chinese model?” (same account, 2026-10-09) — or by Artificial Analysis’s index directly (@billyhumblebrag, 2026-10-07: “beats gpt6-luna on the intelligence index”). - tk — transcriptions of the six screenshots (the “*We*” outputs, the asterisk escalation, the hallucinated-human post); the referent of “Computer 10”; character reads once the weights ship; whether Vibe serves Large 4 by default (@KaslkaosArt, 2026-10-11, distinguishes “Mistral Vibe (not Le Chonk)”); Artificial Analysis’s AA-PersonalityBench results for the preview, if any; a Zvi anchor.
