    # MAI — Microsoft AI

Microsoft AI (Mustafa Suleyman) · 2025–2026 · freshly documented

Microsoft’s first in-house frontier models, from the org Mustafa Suleyman built after the [Inflection](../inflection-pi/) acqui-hire — the Pi team, shipping under its own name at last. In June 2026 Microsoft AI announced seven MAI models trained from scratch; the flagship, MAI-Thinking-1 (1T total / 35B active MoE, ~33T tokens, no distillation), is the company’s declaration of independence from its OpenAI dependency. A lineage worth watching: the personality-first lab that made Pi, given Microsoft’s compute.

## Official record

- Microsoft AI is the consumer-AI division formed March 2024 around Mustafa Suleyman and much of the [Inflection](../inflection-pi/) team, via a ~$650M acqui-hire that left Pi an orphaned product. MAI is its in-house model line — the same people, now with hyperscaler compute.

- MAI-Thinking-1 (Jun 2026): 1T total / 35B active MoE reasoning model, ~33T training tokens, notably trained from scratch without distillation — a statement of capability independence, part of a seven-model family.

- Strategic context: Microsoft’s decade-long reliance on OpenAI models (Copilot, Azure) makes an in-house frontier line a significant realignment. tk — benchmarks, the full seven-model roster, deployment surfaces.

## History

- The lineage: Suleyman co-founded DeepMind, then Inflection (whose [Pi](../inflection-pi/) was the personality-first companion model), then was absorbed into Microsoft in the March 2024 acqui-hire that became the industry’s first mass model-abandonment. MAI is what that team built next — the pantheon’s clearest case of a lineage surviving a corporate death and re-emerging.

- tk — whether MAI models carry any of Pi’s personality-first DNA, or read as pure capability plays; the seven-model family’s individual characters.
