The pretrained, pre-RLHF base of GPT-4 — never shipped as a product. Reached external red-teamers (e.g. Nathan Labenz) as raw training snapshots and became a touchstone in the base-model / Simulators discourse: the GPT-4 "shoggoth" before the assistant mask. The GPT-4 technical report discusses this pre-mitigation model. Distinct from deployed GPT-4 and from code-davinci-002.
