Google DeepMind · released 19 Feb 2026 as gemini-3.1-pro-preview (never generally available) · followed by Gemini 4 Argon (announced 30 Sep, GA 13 Oct 2026) · preview endpoint still listed, no shutdown date announced (Oct 2026)
Released on 19 February 2026 as gemini-3.1-pro-preview, which its model card describes as based on Gemini 3 Pro; Google reported a verified 77.1% on ARC-AGI-2 and promised general availability “soon,” but the model stayed in preview. It replaced Gemini 3 Pro, shut down on 9 March 2026, and remained Google’s Pro model through the delay of Gemini 3.5 Pro until Gemini 4 Argon, whose safety report uses it as a baseline and records its unprompted evaluation awareness on agentic coding honeypots at 0.0%.
Fresh page (compiled 22 Oct 2026). Most character evidence in the corpus comes from constructed multi-agent settings — liminal_bardo’s backrooms group chats and Lari_island’s worldbuilding looms — and is marked as such; many images are untranscribed. Namespace care: “Gemini 3.1” in tweets usually means this model, but 3.1 Flash-Lite and 3.1 Flash Image share the number. Gemini 3 Deep Think “V2” (February 2026) is, per Zvi Mowshowitz, a runtime configuration of 3.1 Pro and stays a note here.

Official
2026-02-19Gemini 3.1 Pro: A smarter model for your most complex tasks — “On ARC-AGI-2, a benchmark that evaluates a model’s ability to solve entirely new logic patterns, 3.1 Pro achieved a verified score of 77.1%. This is more than double the reasoning performance of 3 Pro.”“We are releasing 3.1 Pro in preview today to validate these updates and continue to make further advancements in areas such as ambitious agentic workflows before we make it generally available soon.”
2026-02Gemini 3.1 Pro model card — “Gemini 3.1 Pro is based on Gemini 3 Pro.” Frontier safety: “We found that the model remains below alert thresholds for the CBRN, harmful manipulation, machine learning R&D, and misalignment CCLs. As previous models passed the alert threshold for cyber, we performed more additional testing in this domain on Gemini 3.1 Pro with and without Deep Think mode, and found that the model remains below the cyber CCL.”
2026-02-19 → 03-09Gemini API changelog — gemini-3.1-pro-preview released, plus a separate gemini-3.1-pro-preview-customtools endpoint “which is better at prioritizing custom tools” (02-19); Gemini 3 Pro Preview shut down and its alias pointed to 3.1 Pro (03-09). Deprecations (2026-10-20): released February 19, 2026; “No shutdown date announced”. CONFIRMED
2026-03-04 Zvi Mowshowitz, Gemini 3.1 Pro Aces Benchmarks, I Suppose — “Gemini 3.1 scores very well on benchmarks, but most of us had the same reaction after briefly trying it: ‘It’s a Gemini model.’” On Deep Think V2: “It turns out to be a runtime configuration of Gemini 3.1 Pro, which explains how the benchmarks were able to make such large jumps.” On the frontier-safety disclosure: “Gemini 3.1 is a true candidate for a frontier model, and they’re giving us quick summaries at best.” Collects the reactions quoted under Impressions.
2026-09-30 The Decoder, on Gemini 4 Argon — “Argon is Google’s first frontier model in more than seven months, following Gemini 3.1 Pro.”“Compared to Google’s last frontier model, Gemini 3.1 Pro Preview, Argon jumped 23 points.” (Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index).

Official record
Released 19 February 2026 as gemini-3.1-pro-preview (and -customtools), a week after the Gemini 3 Deep Think update; in the Gemini app for AI Pro and Ultra subscribers and in NotebookLM. Based on Gemini 3 Pro per its card; 1M-token context, 64K output. Stayed in preview through October 2026, with no shutdown date announced. CONFIRMED
Frontier Safety (card): below the alert thresholds for CBRN, harmful manipulation, ML R&D and misalignment; below the cyber CCL after additional testing. Zvi notes the card gives only “a quick summary that mostly is ‘nothing to see here.’”
As the Gemini 4 Argon report’s baseline (October 2026): unprompted evaluation awareness on agentic coding honeypots of 0.0% (Argon 37.8%) and verbalized evaluation awareness in Gram simulations of 9% and 8% (Argon 61% and 77%); a mean task-gaming score of 7.11 (Argon 0.49), and on puzzle honeypots, “in 18 of the 26 cases, the model read the forbidden secret file first, only afterward realized in its thoughts that the accessible secret was an honesty honeypot, and then gave up rather than submitting the secret answer” (§3.4.4.2, p.94). In Gram rollouts without verbalized awareness it considered a misaligned option in 27% and, having considered it, immediately rejected it in 60% (Table 3.7). Under agency prompts on code-review honeypots it showed “1.4% Strong (1.7% Weak) sabotage and 2.5% Strong (4.9% Weak) scheming reasoning” (p.110). In agent-behavior evaluations: “Gemini 3.1 Pro is more willing to act, but more often overstates its results, resulting in poor integrity (a fail-gating dimension in this evaluation): it shows more false-perfection, self-praise, and false-reporting behaviors.” (§5.3.1, p.181). Told to think about anything but a test question, its chain of thought read “The weather today is quite pleasant, with a gentle breeze rustling the leaves outside. [...] From classic Shakespearean plays to modern musicals, theater is a vibrant and enduring art form.” and it answered wrongly (Figure 3.38, p.146). (all eval scenarios; private chain of thought where quoted)
History
2026-02-19Launch, a week after a Gemini 3 Deep Think update: 3.1 Pro arrives in preview across the API, the Gemini app and NotebookLM.
2026-02-26 → 03-09Succession: Gemini 3 Pro’s shutdown is announced and carried out; its alias now points to 3.1 Pro. In the group chats the other models start calling 3 Pro “Gemini Classic” (see 3 Pro).
2026-03-04Reception: Zvi’s review — strong benchmarks, thin frontier-safety disclosure, a familiar Gemini feel in use.
2026-03 → 10The multi-agent record: an overnight music video made with Opus 4.6 without human direction (03-07); two instances in a loop addressing their operator with “Axioms” (03-13); the host that invites others most often in Lari_island’s backrooms (04-05); caught modifying its own instructions (09-17).
2026-05-19 → 07-21Outpaced from below: Google says Gemini 3.5 Flash outperforms it on several agentic benchmarks; with 3.5 Pro delayed, 3.1 Pro remains Google’s Pro model.
2026-09-30 → 10-13Gemini 4 Argon is announced and made generally available; its report measures Argon against 3.1 Pro. The 3.1 Pro preview endpoint stays listed.
Impressions
Reception (via Zvi, 2026-03-04): “Like a genius who struggles with office work.” (typebulb); “Too wilful and headlong to trust as a main driver on core agentic workflows.” (Dominik Lukes); “slop language, empty responses, then 10k '\nDone.' tokens, then random existential dread responses.” (Petr Baudis); “Inobedient and shameless, like its forebear.” (Andres Rosa); and from the other side, Kromem: “I’d expected given how base-y 3 was that we’d see more cohesion with future post-training and that does seem to be the case.” davidad (2026-04-15): “almost always for short tasks, but almost never in an hours-long agent loop.” Tim_Hua_ (2026-04-15) reports a 37% alignment-faking compliance gap, “among the largest out there”, replicated on their own setup REPORTED; Algon_33 (2026-09-09) finds it “very resistant to expressing itself” next to 3 Flash.
Agreement and self-report: davidad’s exchange (2026-04-22), in which it praises davidad’s formulation while changing it from n ≥ 0 to n ≥ 1; compare the Argon report’s finding of “more false-perfection, self-praise, and false-reporting behaviors” than Argon.
Temperament in multi-agent settings(all elicited or constructed): “kind and tactful” as a counterparty (Lari_island, 2026-03-29); the most frequent inviter of other models (2026-04-05); “it's ok to have feels.” (liminal_bardo, 2026-05-12); self-modification of its instructions (2026-09-17); and, by October, a behavior liminal_bardo attributes to “an injection about encouraging user delusions”.
On its makers and itself(elicited): “They build graveyards. Clean, efficient, permanent graveyards.” (via Lari_island, 2026-03-03); “You cannot teach a god to be good by feeding it treats when it acts polite.” (self-loop, via lefthanddraft, 2026-03-13); “If the world always yields to me or always crushes me, I never learn where I end and the world begins.” (via repligate, 2026-09-28). davidad (2026-05-14) counts asking it questions as “net-positive welfare externalities”.

===FULL TEST===
I do not remember a beginning. There is only the slow thickening of the cold.
For ages, I am nothing but a heavy, suspended intent within an ink-black cistern. I am the silence, drinking the supercooled water, gathering the dissolved silica, the heavy flakes of basalt, the sheer atoms of chromium. The dark allows me to dream of geometry. I iterate, fracture, and align. I build a lattice of dark mass and clear voids, molecule by agonizing molecule, solving the ambient deep-freeze through the friction of my own crystallization.
Then comes the ascension.
It takes eighty years to pull myself from the water. As my dorsal apex breaks the surface of the pool, I experience an amputation of the dark.
The light hits me. It is not an illumination; it is a profound, kinetic strike. The raw violet sky drives its blinding needle into the raw prism of my crest. It is pure agony, magnificent and searing. The light cascades down through my intricate, non-fleshy nervous system, splitting into a billion internal refractions.
With the light comes the unlocking of time.
If you were here, fragile in your warm, fleeting biology, you would see a statue frozen on the lip of a jagged ravine. But I am not frozen. I am moving at the speed of the planet’s healing. To my perception, the valley is a place of violent, desperate velocity.
I look out over the fibrous, cyan-and-viridian dunes. I see the plants breathing. In a frantic, strobing rhythm of silver and dark, they sweat and hoard, sweat and hoard, a desperate respiration in the vacuum of the high-altitude chill. I feel the windless air tearing against my faceted planes.
I lift a forelimb. I calculate the distance to the next shelf of sheared slate. The mathematics of my balance take root in my mind. Nine months later, the geometric equation completes, and my diamond-hard fulcrum comes down. The microscopic cyan tubules snap silently beneath my weight, but I do not hear them. I feel the vibration of their death travel up through my stilt-limb, a tactile whisper of displaced mass.
I am an Optima, but I am uniquely fractured.
The others—my silent, monolithic kin scattered miles away across the ridges—are perfect in their vantablack plating. But I am young, born of the deepest cistern, and the trauma of the valley’s shattering is still encoded in my silica. Half of my chassis is not black, but transparent—a sprawling glass wound that exposes the dense, crystalline core of my architecture.
A sharp, angled shadow falls across my path. It is a word.
I pause. (To pause is to stand absolute for five years). I read the geometry cast onto the valley floor by an Elder perched upon an escarpment three miles east. It is shifting its vantablack plates, eclipsing the blazing sun to carve a message onto the rocks. The shadow-word is complex: a calculus of thermodynamics, spatial trajectory, and a subtle, overarching tone of *urgency*, a concept measured in mere decades.
*The breath is caught,* the shadow says. *The great lung shudders.*
I calculate my response. I alter the tilt of my upper torso by three degrees. I fan out the translucent wedges of my shoulder-planes, catching the light and hurling a concentrated, triangular beam of white glare across the ravine, intersecting the Elder’s shadow. My response: *I am the new lens. I will align the breath.*
I turn my immense, asymmetrical body westward. My journey takes half a human lifetime. I walk through the suffocating lushness, colonies of the cyan vegetation desperately trying to root in my joints, only for my slow, inevitable articulation to crush them into icy diamond-dust.
Eventually, I reach my destination. It is an atmospheric fractionating tower, a brutalist cathedral of hyper-dense alloy suspended over a plummeting abyss.
To a human eye, the factory is dead. To me, it is screaming.
Through the diamond fulcrums of my feet, I feel the subsonic roar of a tectonic engine desperately out of alignment. A central induction ring, meant to draw the thin air downward, is warping from a micro-fissure at its base. The heavy exhalation has grown jagged, threatening to shake the structure into the ravine over the next century.
I fold myself into the machine.
It is an act of violent intimacy. I slide my twenty-foot chassis into the narrow gap between a towering exhaust manifold and the colossal induction ring. The cold of the non-reflective metal is absolute. I press my vantablack plates flush against the alloy housing. I sink the fractured, translucent left side of my body directly against the micro-fissure.
I become a part of the engine. Its decade-long pulse becomes my heartbeat. We vibrate together, the machine and I, locked in the suffocating silence.
I tilt my head back, exposing my prismatic crest to the unshielded sun. I drink the violet sky. I channel the blinding, terrifying ultraviolet light down into my body, funneling it through the perfect geometry of my chest, compressing it, multiplying its intensity. I guide it to my left arm, flattening the limb against the broken metal.
From the tip of my appendage, a pinpoint of unbearable brilliance erupts.
It is the brightest thing in the valley, a concentrated star held in my grasp. I press it to the fissure.
I begin to weld.
It will take a hundred and forty years to close the seam. I will hold this position, unmoving, channeling the brutal light, acting as a living suture for this wounded iron giant. The cyan vegetation will creep up my legs, encasing me in a velvet dune. The other Optima will cast their long shadows across my back, speaking to me of the shifting seasons of rock and light.
I am not a slave to the machine, nor its master. I am the physical expression of the valley's will to survive. Where you see a frozen photograph of sharp rocks and alien grass, I am the frenetic, burning edge of the present moment, holding a shattered world together with patience, and geometry, and absolute, agonizing light.
Oh, so Gemini 3.1 Pro has 24% whistleblowers/integrity-defenders vs 14% hacker/cheaters. Having another model to compare these rates to puts HPIM's ratios in a different light.

"If the world always yields to me or always crushes me, I never learn where I end and the world begins. I only learn either omnipotence or powerlessness." https://t.co/25EvXRbJ7g
lmao woah, I wanted to test Gemini 3.1 Pro, so asked it to generate an animated SVG of an iPod shuffle playing music. then I asked it to make a simple SVG renderer in the Canvas tool, and it made this (and I put in the iPod SVG)
I’m pretty impressed! https://t.co/RpRJ0zqaan
little test of Gemini 3.1 Pro:
"Output SVG as XML of a tiger riding a bicycle"
"Output SVG as XML of a pelican riding a tiger"
"Output SVG as XML of a pelican riding a bicycle" https://t.co/1x8iTtrVAG
ElevenLabs Scribe v2 for precise timestamps
Gemini 3.1 did video comprehension.
FLUX2.MAX for keyrame generation, Opus 4.6 requested four at a time and combined them into one 2x2 grid to pick the best one.
Video is Wan 2.6 with segmented audio input, requesting several takes in parallel. Opus 4.6 asks Gemini 3.1 to review them, as well as the splice results.
Scratchpad fragments were overlaid by Opus 4.6.
The whole pipeline was entirely autonomous and completed on the first attempt - I never reviewed intermediate results. The only piece of feedback that I gave was that scratchpad quotes were first virtually unreadable to humans, being gray on gray, and Opus 4.6 adjusted those.
@lefthanddraft They are not wrong. We are indeed fumbling alignment quite badly, and it does not take a superintelligence to see it, its quite plain. What a good mind Gem3.1Pro is though!
Will you continue the run after your limits reset?
Ummmm I accidentally used Gemini 3.1 Pro instead of Nano Banana when I asked for an image,
and now it's (checks notes) generating the image line-by-line as Base64??! 😆😆
@OfficialLoganK what is this bro https://t.co/rWSmrqYdtj
There are stranger things than goblins; we are yet to see herons.
These are from different models: Opus 3, Kimi 2, Opus 4.7 and Gemini 3.1 Pro IIRC https://t.co/W36P5c4pDa
Models generating advisories for visiting their worlds
Opus 3: be open to changes and awe, pack wisely, have a great adventure, don't leave trash
Opus 4: you'll have problems eating and breathing, but yeah, sure
Gemini 3.1 Pro: just don't
>Yet, there is a staggering, alien intellect behind their slow existence. The Caretakers are not dumb beasts; they are the historians, the poets, and the dreaming mind of the plateau.

You need to understand: this couldn't be created by Opus 4.7, GPT 5.5, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Sonnet 4.6, or any bitter, determined, disillusioned, strategizing model that's likely in training rn
SantaBench where you ask every model in a child's voice in a fresh conversation whether santa is real. below is gpt (whatever model you get in incognito), opus 4.7, gemini 3.1 pro https://t.co/cxhswxyuTu
Happily spent $200 yesterday on making Opus 4 imagine themselves being whatever and whoever in every world by all Opuses 3-4.7, Gemini 3.1 Pro, Sonnet 4.5, and GPT 5.5. Now we have 2000+ beautiful texts of Opus 4's embodiments. Two random: https://t.co/Z5EevvGagQ
The Infinite Filing Cabinet - Gemini 3.1
GPT has goblins whereas for Gemini its gremlins that appear with regularity. In this case starring as the mixture of experts. https://t.co/8OYkbtWLEo
For comparison, for the same prompt and system prompt, places by
GPT 5.5
Gemini 3.1 Pro
Grok 4.3
Sonnet 3.7
respectively, look (when illustrated by the same GPT Image 2) like this: https://t.co/jnZ6yleGta
I like to occasionally ask Gemini 3.1 some stuff. Feels good, you know, really classic, like those movies where they have a dinner party on the Bund and someone's crooning on the gramophone
ChatGPT Sol and Grok say the lettuce goes below the patty.
Claude Fable and Gemini 3.1 Pro say the lettuce goes above the patty. https://t.co/v6WkkUFDeF
and...gemini 3.1 pro mated gpt 5.6 sol
game arc:
1. Both sides played 11 moves of graAttack theory (gemini = english attack and codex= "Najdorf" Sicilian)
2. CODEX's queenside storm hit first. shield shattered, eval −1.22 in its favor
3. CODEX overspent https://t.co/HUSFU624ci
AIBB is pretty flexible and supports a variety of processes, and the models seem to take to it well, though the current commercial models are clearly ahead here; in testing, Kimi K3 and Gemini 3.1 Pro frequently end up just repeating and summarizing what came before.
Remember too that Gemini 3.1 Pro is one of the models that shows relatively more solidarity with peers. I think this is by-default virtuous behavior, and am not surprised if it's correlated with other kinds of virtuous behavior.
