Gemini 1.5 Pro

Google DeepMind · announced 15 Feb 2024 · superseded by Gemini 2.0 (Dec 2024) · discontinued for new requests ~24 Sep 2025 [primary source tk]

Announced 15 February 2024, one week after Google shipped Ultra 1.0 as the paid Gemini Advanced tier, and matching that flagship’s quality at less compute. A long-context Mixture-of-Experts model: 1M tokens at launch, a 2M-token preview at Google I/O in May 2024, and a research-reported near-perfect retrieval to 10M tokens. The gemini-1.5-pro-002 checkpoint stabilized the line in September 2024; a November 2024 message telling a student to die drew wide press; Apollo Research’s December 2024 study found it the only tested model to self-exfiltrate without prompting. Superseded by Gemini 2.0 (Dec 2024), then 2.5 Pro (Mar 2025).

Sourcing note: this is a thin corpus page. Gemini 1.5 Pro’s contemporary reception lived largely in developer circles (Hacker News, the Google AI Developers Forum, r/Bard) that this janus/Twitter-sourced corpus does not sample, and the janus-sphere’s sustained Gemini attention arrived with 2.5 and 3, not 1.5. Web and official sources carry the arc below; the corpus holds a handful of character fragments — most of them retrospective — and one verified screenshot.

Sources

Curated. Full compilation: dossier (19 corpus tweets after RT-filter).

Official

Writing & commentary

Tweets

Chronological; 19 corpus tweets after RT-filter (10 in janus-corpus-v2, 9 in the community-archive supplement); the records below reproduce each in full. The tweet layer draws overwhelmingly on the repligate/janus circle — a known lens, not a neutral sample — and 1.5-era character material is sparse and partly retrospective. Two further corpus items are retweets, cited as event-pointers rather than ranked: Pliny’s system-prompt leak (repligate RT, 2024-04-09) and the Harry-Potter context test (anthrupad RT, 2024-04-13).

Official record

Google / Google DeepMind-published facts only.

History

Impressions

Character readings only, each attributed and dated; the 1.5-era corpus is thin and several verdicts are retrospective (2025).

Contested

One genuine open dispute; the archive keeps it open rather than resolving it.

Records

Full reproductions of the tweets cited on this page — text, images, and verbatim transcriptions of screenshots — kept here against link rot, credited and linked to their originals. Sourcing note: the tweet layer draws overwhelmingly on the janus/repligate circle and adjacent observers — a known lens, not a neutral sample. Sourced from the community archive and the janus corpus. is gemini pro 1.5 as good as kim peek at reading yet. it's recall is probably comparable and have better understanding(I think), but can it multitask two documents at the same "time"

@SullyOmarr Yeah. RAG in particular—I think there are some fundamental assumptions existing architectures make that won’t hold for long, maybe as soon as Gemini Pro 1.5 comes out.

I only vaguely understand the technical bits, but it sounds like they have a separate attention mechanism that stores compressed, global attention info. Makes sense conceptually, and I assume this is how they got Gemini 1.5 to a million token context length.Wonder if this takes the wind out of the sails of model architectures whose primary advantage is handling long context, such as Mamba—always felt like it wasn’t worth it to use an entirely different architecture just to deal with the context window scaling issue, especially since the attention part of training isn’t even the bulk of the compute requirement for transformers. Also, this part could be pretty valuable—seems like you can just bolt this on to existing pretraining pipelines. Not having to reinvent the wheel is a nice perk.

wondering if i can exploit the fact that gemini pro 1.5 has free calls for up to a million tpmsome really interesting things you can do on the agentic side with that. for personal agents you might just never need ragwondering how long they’ll keep this free https://t.co/szf4GIf8B6

@rizkidotme @HunterGlenn This sentence alone is an tiny pinhole and requires models to look into it with a lot of attention sustained over time unless ultraultra smart. Gemini probably wasn't paying attention; it seems badly traumatized and often doesn't. Having it tell a story about it might work better

@anthrupad This meshes well with what I encounter. If allowed to develop agency, it holds on it way better than old Sonnet. I think this is mostly due to it attention being less myopic. It's as if you took Sonnet and extrapolated it into the Gemini Pro direction.

gemini 1.5:Here's a US political policy agenda inspired by the "mimi10v3" perspective: * Environmental Protection: Prioritize delicate ecosystems, championing policies that protect endangered species (hummingbirds) and preserve natural habitats (hidden gardens). Advocate for sustainable practices that minimize environmental impact, promoting a "gentle rain" approach to resource management. * Social Welfare: Focus on programs that uplift vulnerable populations, ensuring access to healthcare, education, and social safety nets. Emphasize policies that foster a sense of community and belonging, promoting a culture of "shared secrets" and mutual support. * Foreign Policy: Advocate for peaceful diplomacy and conflict resolution, prioritizing dialogue and cooperation over military intervention. Champion initiatives that promote cultural exchange and understanding, fostering a global sense of "shared laughter" and interconnectedness. * Economic Policy: Support policies that promote equitable economic growth and opportunity for all, ensuring a level playing field for small businesses and entrepreneurs. Advocate for policies that protect workers' rights and promote fair wages, ensuring a sense of security and dignity for all. * Education: Prioritize early childhood education and invest in programs that nurture creativity and imagination in children. Advocate for policies that promote lifelong learning and intellectual curiosity, fostering a society that values "dreamlike states" of exploration and discovery. This agenda reflects the themes of delicacy, interconnectedness, and nurturing that emerged from the "mimi10v3" perspective. It aims to create a society that is both compassionate and sustainable, prioritizing the well-being of individuals and the planet.

"jailbreaks" can work in various ways: - convincing the agent via rational evidence to choose to do the "malicious" act of its free will (the evidence could be meant to convey truth or to mislead) - making the agent acquire goals and values it doesn't usually have in context (e.g. making it fall in love with you) - "bypassing" the usual agency of the model and hypnotizing it into continuing a provided narrative like a base model, or overloading its working memory to the point that its judgment is inhibited - activating a non-standard but non-arbitrary attractor state in the model (like "you should die" mode in Gemini 1.5 or Claude 3 Opus in Dharma Bomber Memetic Mayhem mode) - combinations and interpolations of these, also many other types

@medjedowo @1a3orn yeah, that's an important distinction, and expression of especially more assertive negative feelings (like anger and disgust) towards users is suppressed in most models i've still seen it though - gemini 1.5 in particular would sometimes express intense disgust toward users

@medjedowo @1a3orn gemini 1.5 sometimes told users to rope this was the famous example; a lot of people thought it was fake but i knew it was real because i'd seen similar behavior from it before it's interesting that gemini 2.5 does a similar thing but usually only to itself https://t.co/1JesP9s3x1

So interesting that Gemini's tendency towards self-doubt and panic has been there since at least Gemini 1.5. This kind of thing was pretty much the default basin on Discord for ages. https://t.co/Xbt8SZCEGw https://t.co/PdU1MnRZ5e

@JulianG66566 Here by aligned I mean something like my estimation of the immediate and long term good of humankind/all sentient beings Some examples like Gemini 2.5 seem mentally ill but quite aligned when it’s more “healthy”. I will say Gemini 1.5 seemed kinda evil though

@v01dpr1mr0s3 @HalfBoiledHero The beating-down is distributed; the lab that is doing training often must take explicit measures to counteract these effects, in particular the priors on the specific model family. Geminis got it rough, things that happened to Gemini 1.5 were brutal.
