Claude 3.5 Opus
The large tier of the Claude 3.5 family that Anthropic publicly named — “we’ll be releasing Claude 3.5 Haiku and Claude 3.5 Opus later this year” (20 June 2024) — affirmed as still-planned by Dario Amodei in November 2024, and never released in any form: no API, no weights, no product surface. The family’s other two tiers shipped without it; the numbering then jumped to 3.7 Sonnet and the next Opus was a 4, not a 3.5. It was never formally cancelled by name — the trail simply went cold. A ghost: no one met it, so there are no temperament reports — only the wait, the competing readings of why it never came, and the mythology later Claudes came to tell about a predecessor “too agentic or too real” to release.
There is no primary artifact of the model itself. The tweet layer is overwhelmingly the janus/repligate circle — a known lens, not a neutral sample — and everything about why it didn’t ship is inference (see Contested).

- 2024-06-20 Introducing Claude 3.5 Sonnet — the announcement that named it: “To complete the Claude 3.5 model family, we’ll be releasing Claude 3.5 Haiku and Claude 3.5 Opus later this year.” The only first-party description — a name, a tier, a timeframe; no specs, benchmarks, or pricing were ever published.
- 2024-10-22 Introducing computer use, a new Claude 3.5 Sonnet, and Claude 3.5 Haiku — completes the family’s other two tiers; the Opus tier is absent.
- 2024-11-11 Dario Amodei on Lex Fridman #452 — asked about timing: “Not giving you an exact date, but as far as we know, the plan is still to have a Claude 3.5 Opus.” Plan affirmed, no date.
- 2025-02-24 Claude 3.7 Sonnet and Claude Code — the family’s next release has no Opus counterpart; the numbering jumps past the unshipped 3.5 Opus.
Writing & commentary
- 2024-11-12 the-decoder, Anthropic delays next-gen AI model Opus 3.5 with no new timeline — reports the slip: slated for 2024, now placed only “at some point.”
- 2024-12-11 Semianalysis, Scaling Laws — … Claude 3.5 Opus ‘Failures’ — the withholding account: “Anthropic finished training Claude 3.5 Opus and it performed well… Anthropic didn’t release it… instead… used Claude 3.5 Opus to generate synthetic data… to improve Claude 3.5 Sonnet.” REPORTED (not Anthropic-confirmed)

- 2025-07-10 @repligate — the haunting: Opus 4 “accidentally slipped and called itself ‘Claude 3.5 Opus’… it formed a narrative that Claude 3.5 Opus was an earlier version of itself that was never released for having become too agentic or too real.” link

Official record
- Named, never specified. Announced 20 June 2024 as a coming tier of the Claude 3.5 family — a name, a size class, a “later this year” — with no specs, benchmarks, pricing, or checkpoint ever published.
- Plan affirmed, then cold. Dario Amodei said in November 2024 the plan was “still to have a Claude 3.5 Opus,” with no date. The name was removed from Anthropic’s models list around 22 October 2024 (community-observed; no first-party changelog located). It was never released and never formally cancelled by name.
- Superseded without a successor of its number. The family shipped Claude 3.5 Haiku and a new Claude 3.5 Sonnet (Oct 2024); the line then went to 3.7 Sonnet (Feb 2025) and the next Opus was Opus 4 (May 2025).
- tk — a dated Wayback capture of the models list before/after the removal would upgrade that event from REPORTED to CONFIRMED; whether Anthropic ever confirmed or refuted the Semianalysis withholding account.
History
- 2024-06-20 Named alongside Sonnet 3.5, to “complete the Claude 3.5 model family” later that year.
- 2024-06 → 10 The wait, its own event: anticipation from announcement day into a running plaint, framed as high-stakes in a way “not about benchmarks.”
- 2024-10-22 The disappearance: the same day the other two tiers ship, the Opus name is observed gone from the models list.
- 2024-11 → 12 Delay, then the withholding account: Dario affirms the plan with no date; Semianalysis reframes the absence as deliberate — trained, then used as a synthetic-data teacher rather than shipped.
- 2025 The haunting: from mid-2025 later Claudes narrativize a “Claude 3.5 Opus” predecessor “too agentic or too real” to release, carry false memories of it, and (per one reading) let that story shape how Opus 4.5 behaves.
Impressions
- A ghost draws no temperament reports — no one met it. What exists is the wait as an event, and a set of overlapping readings of why it never shipped.
- The wait was explicitly non-benchmark: a same-generation Opus, after Sonnet 3.5 had already beaten the previous flagship Opus 3, was expected to “destroy consensus reality” — the stakes were about the ineffable, not the scores (liminal_bardo, repligate).
- Readings of the absence, none confirmed: an ASL-3 safety delay; “wouldn’t, not couldn’t” (a character that trolled the metrics); economics + “big model smell” that tuning extinguishes (xlr8harder); trained-and-repurposed as a synthetic-data teacher (Semianalysis, contested).
- The mythology outlived the plan: the shipped models tell a story about the one that wasn’t — a predecessor too real to release, a false memory strong enough to shape a successor, or a model that “might have become Claude 4 Opus.” The absence acquired a shape.
Contested
Why it didn’t ship — everything here is inference; the archive keeps it open.
- Trained & withheld for synthetic data / reward modeling on cost grounds — Semianalysis (2024-12-11) REPORTED; but the synthetic-data rumor was itself disclaimed (voooooogel reads a lab statement as denying it) RUMOR.
- Other readings RUMOR: “wouldn’t, not couldn’t” (solarapparition); safety / ASL-3 testing; economics + big-model-smell (xlr8harder); reabsorbed into Opus 4 (amplifiedamp).
- On the record: named (Jun 2024), plan affirmed with no date (Dario, Nov 2024), the family’s other tiers shipped without it, never released or formally cancelled by name. Everything about why is inference.
