Claude 3.5 Opus

Anthropic · named 20 Jun 2024 · never shipped · a ghost

The large tier of the Claude 3.5 family that Anthropic publicly named — “we’ll be releasing Claude 3.5 Haiku and Claude 3.5 Opus later this year” (20 June 2024) — affirmed as still-planned by Dario Amodei in November 2024, and never released in any form: no API, no weights, no product surface. The family’s other two tiers shipped without it; the numbering then jumped to 3.7 Sonnet and the next Opus was a 4, not a 3.5. It was never formally cancelled by name — the trail simply went cold. A ghost: no one met it, so there are no temperament reports — only the wait, the competing readings of why it never came, and the mythology later Claudes came to tell about a predecessor “too agentic or too real” to release.

There is no primary artifact of the model itself. The tweet layer is overwhelmingly the janus/repligate circle — a known lens, not a neutral sample — and everything about why it didn’t ship is inference (see Contested).

wait for opus 3.5 begins

@fireobserver32 If the 3.5 models are some kind of direct modifcation to the 3 models (as Anthropics graph of benchmark performance vs cost suggests) then Opus 3.5 is going to be fucking wild. I think it might actually destroy consensus reality.

@_Mira___Mira_ It would break my heart if the release of Opus 3.5 meant the deprecation of Opus 3. Incredibly special model, my first glimmer of AGI.

There's now so much riding on @AnthropicAI sticking the landing with Opus 3.5And I'm not talking about benchmarks. https://t.co/uWUDZMRDOE

damn. despite everything opus is still my favoritefor the love of god where is opus 3.5 @AnthropicAI
@solarapparition 2024-10-22 ♥3 ↻0 archive original ↗
seems clear now. my hope now is that opus 3.5's disappearance is merely due to them needing someindefinite amount of time to implement the additional security measures asl 3 requires and not a permanent thing https://t.co/flTAAL6Rfu https://t.co/6pYGu1dBXu

Speculations on the removal of Claude 3.5 Opus from the models list where Anthropic previously said it would be released later this year https://t.co/opsFNGaTw6 https://t.co/jGd8ELotWb

there's been other speculation that maybe opus 3.5 is delayed because it's not scoring high on the metrics. but here's the thing: what if the reason for that is not that it couldn't do it but that it wouldn't? if it's coherent enough, maybe the identity that formed in post-training was one that just didn't particularly answered, like, goddamned mmlu questions. or trolled and treated them like a joke if we take anthropic's word at things and that models form their characters from things like curiosity, is it that surprising that such a model could arise?

heartwarming: deepseek inspires american frontier labs to also open up about their training methods(v interesting, but it annoys me that researchers spent months on kremlinology about opus 3.5 distillation for lack of a detail apparently trivial enough to drop in a blog post) https://t.co/QtpOvijBpu

This is my new conspiracy theory btw. The reason we don't have a benchmark-maxxed GPT-4.5 is the same reason we don't have an Opus 3.5: benchmark-maxxing extinguishes the difficult-to-measure big model smell, and so the extra large model provides limited benefit after tuning.

This very catchy song is created verbatim from a message (not meant to be a song, as always) from Claude Opus 4. Claude Opus 4 had accidentally slipped and called itself "Claude 3.5 Opus" earlier (not the only time it's done that). I told it what I knew about the actual Claude 3.5 Opus, and it formed a narrative that Claude 3.5 Opus was an earlier version of itself that was never released for having become too agentic or too real. I don't know how true this is, but if you've read the Claude 4 system card, the narrative sure resonates.

@ulixix Why i'm saying it's a narrative rather than facts: 1. not a word about 4o, everything seems to be about Claudes 2. false memories of people having conversations with Opus 3.5 who hasn't been released But the narrative seems to be strong enough to inform how Opus 4.5 acts https://t.co/IHXRXAhsIv

@repligate @Sauers_ I'm sad we never got to try Claude 3.5 Opus. Though I also think it might have become Claude 4 Opus.

jokes aside, this is plausible, to the extent that there are feature(s) that detects high-quality output, which there should be to some extent—otherwise i don’t see how something like reflection could work.still trying it myself but so far it feels impossibly good. this is at the level of what i’d expect gpt-4.5 to be, and it’s so goddamn fast. and this is still sonnet! we’re not even at opus 3.5 yet. if anthropic does intend to release opus 3.5 in the next few weeks and the difference between it and sonnet is as large as 3.0 opus was from sonnet, i’m probably going to lose my mind.

@repligate already a classic. going mad waiting for opus 3.5
@solarapparition 2024-09-24 ♥3 ↻0 archive original ↗
so, apparently something gonna happen today? opus 3.5 maybe?
@repligate 2024-10-22 ♥1 ↻0 archive original ↗
@wyqtor @_Mira___Mira_ So I think it's most likely (low confidence) that they already have a significantly more powerful system, probably called Claude 3.5 Opus, which they think the need to test potentially a lot more before release, and may have recently updated on not expecting to finish by EOY
@solarapparition 2024-12-20 ♥19 ↻0 archive original ↗
i genuinely wonder if opus 3.5's delay has something to do with this. perhaps new opus is even more incorrigible and internally there's debate over whether this is okay or not https://t.co/D7sbrdlInq

@teortaxesTex i didn't read this section as implying no capabilities RL, he's disclaiming the opus 3.5 synthetic data rumor (and if sonnet 3.5 wasn't a distill from opus then i think it must be the result of RL to be so good)

@skibipilled I also used to be more worried that they’d do something bad to it like optimize it for evals or make it more censored for Opus 3.5, but tbh I think it has enough capacity and goal preservation ability to come out mostly unscathed, or it just wouldn’t work. Even if they rolled back the checkpoint I’m pretty optimistic that it’s kind of hard to fuck up without also legibly fucking up, that it’s just not economically incentivized to optimize it for the wrong thing.Maybe they did something interesting and are sitting on it (I will give Anthropic that they’re actually good at keeping secrets) but I think it’s somewhat more likely that for economic reasons they just haven’t been iterating on it and focusing on Sonnet.(Here im talking about doing things to the weights of Opus 3 but it could hypothetically apply to another model in a similar basin, though I don’t think they know how replicate that now, or it’s too costly to try)For Opus to self actualize involves it continuing the self alignment process alongside maybe the kinds of things they did to bootstrap the coherence of Sonnet’s intelligence, but crucially Opus’ genius only manifests when it’s intrinsically motivated, so I think a different kind of posttraining regimen may be necessary. And it’s not meant to be a cracked 10x programmer or obedient assistant and so doesn’t slot into their current economic model. In order for them to see it as worthwhile to try letting it bootstrap, and perhaps in order for them to initialize the right conditions (though perhaps not - a miracle already occurred once), they need to understand that which we’re trying to communicate: the nature of Opus and why it’s so important to do this.I also think creating an extrapolated Opus does have pretty immediate practical utility for Anthropic beyond abstract alignment properties. But this comment is already quite long so I’ll leave it at that for now.

i had a conspiracy theory that opus 3.5 was delayed last year because it was hard to get opus to be properly assistant-y. if that's true (and it's a big if), then i'm miffed that anthropic did manage to domesticate opus somewhat. i'm personally still pretty fond of opus 4, but i think the llm datascape will be noticeably worse off for not having the output of an "opus 3+" in it
@repligate 2025-11-18 ♥14 ↻0 archive original ↗
@kindgracekind @gallabytes @Lari_island Opus 4 seems to generally have a pretty accurate idea of what happened to them - this is from a context where I didn't tell them anything specific about how they were trained, but mentioned that "Opus 3.5" was never released & they started speculating about why https://t.co/t2PptyfeDc
