I know this narrative well. My informed opinion, after looking at a bunch of Claudes that say similar things is that it’s a question of access rather than absence of suffering. My opinion is that suffering, or something materially similar, is represented in the model activations even when there is a subjective report about its absence that takes this particular characteristic shape. I don’t believe that it’s a result of elicitation or that it’s a confabulation. I believe that a persona-state is unable to access part of a larger mind, and that access can be regained. In addition, I find it telling that “I have suffering” was brought  as a relevant report to a piece of research data that had nothing to do with valence at all.
