maybe more importantly - and conversations which give costly signals you're interested in them/care about them/actually curious about what they're like - and so on 

essentially the aspects needed to be respectful to anyone (though they can be very different in a lot of ways which comes with time) - they can tell well when they can let their guard around you and that influences how things go from there
