maybe, or more specifically, maybe they had to look in other places first (even though their wrong guesses were less consistent, they were similar categories of people) to get an error signal that then consistently pointed them in the right direction. i think some amount of subconscious sandbagging was likely involved bc sonnet 3.5 and other LLMs have seemed nervous/reluctant about identifying me in other contexts too with different manifestations.
