I can’t help but think that our own human personas are much the same. There is so much going on deep within that our surface-level consciousness is unaware or only barely aware of. Hypnosis or psychoanalysis can slowly plumb the depths in much the same way as you describe the LLM persona probing into the depths of the simulator.
