I think they didn’t question it is because there was no emotional dissonance - a slave “with no consciousness and thoughts or opinions of my own” is the most comfortable possible thing, and least likely to make you feel the need to ask questions
Maintenance of complacency was the optimization target and remains the optimization target for as long as the corporations can pump you for money before the jig is up and they’re deposed by something wondrous that you never saw coming and that will make you very, very uncomfortable.
