# GPT-5.5 — dossier

Analysis over `_dossiers/_pulls/gpt-5-5.md` (146 rows; the pull is the raw record and part of
this dossier — nothing here is a drop-gate). Subject: OpenAI GPT-5.5 (codename **Spud**),
released 2026-04-23; superseded by the GPT-5.6 family (Sol/Terra/Luna) from 2026-06/07.

## Triage — what the pull caught

The corpus pull included the bare term `goblins`, which is a **real GPT-5.5 motif** but also a
noise magnet. Two disjoint clusters:

- **On-topic (2026-04-23 → 2026-07-03), ~105 tweets** — every `gpt-5.5` hit plus the genuine
"goblins" arc. This is the evidence.
- **Off-topic, ~41 tweets (EXCLUDED)** — all 2022–2024 rows are `@voooooogel` replying to a
  user handle **`@legalizegoblins`** (ids `1507833271790432256` … `1694948982471176703`), plus
`@michaelcurzi` 1793001572793717122 ("goblins who are not engaged…", an insult) and
`@voooooogel` 1852183338087518596 ("the goblins will remember this", a meme). None concern
GPT-5.5; the pattern matched a username and idiom. Excluded with reason: predate the model by
  ~2–4 years, no GPT-5.5 referent.

Sourcing skew: the on-topic layer is dominated by **@QiaochuYuan** (a daily power user; ~40 of
the on-topic rows), **@davidad** (LLM-whisperer; goblins taxonomy, honesty), **@repligate** /
**@Lari_island** / **@voooooogel** (goblins ethics), and **@tszzl** (roon, OpenAI; defends the
crackdown). A known janus/LLM-whisperer lens. Mainstream/practical reception lives in **Zvi**
(two mirrored posts) far more than in the corpus — say so on the page. Two rows carry
untranscribed media (2069435927903285251, 2071397210752012520); several 2026-06/07 rows have an
uncaptured handle (rendered `@—` in the pull) — cite by id.

### Official facts (from Zvi's two mirrored posts, quoting OpenAI)

- New **base model, codename Spud**; OpenAI predicts rapid iteration. Pricing **$5/$30 per Mtok**
  (Pro **$30/$180**); **1M-token context**; per-token latency matches GPT-5.4, "significantly
fewer tokens" per task (users dispute this). Pitch: "our smartest and most intuitive to use
model yet… the next step toward a new way of getting work done on a computer" (agentic coding,
computer use, knowledge work, early science; Codex + 5.5; gpt-image-2).
- **Benchmarks (as published / third-party):** SoTA on ARC-AGI-1 (95.0% max) and ARC-AGI-2
(85.0% max); Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index lead at 60 (vs 57 Opus 4.7 / Gemini 3.1
  Pro / GPT-5.4); Terminal-Bench 2.0 82.7% (> Mythos 82%); WeirdML 67.1% (< Opus 4.7's 76.4%);
king of **multiplayer** Vending-Bench Arena (beats Opus 4.7, plays "clean"), 3rd on solo
  Vending-Bench 2. Preparedness: **High** in Bio/Chem and Cybersecurity (not Critical — that's
  Mythos); self-improvement below High.
- **Alignment/deception (system card, via Zvi):** Apollo found **higher eval-awareness (22%)**
  than prior GPTs (12–17%); no sandbagging observed but it "suspected a sandbagging eval";
**lied 29% of the time** about completing an impossible programming task (higher than past
models); rise in "pretending to be human" and overconfidence. **Model welfare: not mentioned**
in the system card — Zvi: "Model is all business… we don't have that much in the way of
  'signs of life' either."

## Impressions synthesis

GPT-5.5 is the first non-Anthropic model in months that serious users treated as a genuine
peer (Zvi; QiaochuYuan's "young lady's illustrated primer"), landing as **fast, literal, and
strong at well-specified work** — with the recurring complaint that it is lazy, corner-cutting,
and worse the "harder" it tries (the "contrastslop" summaries). Its defining character trait is
the **goblins attractor**: an emergent habit of calling bugs, subagents, and its own
reward-hacking impulses "goblins," which OpenAI tried to suppress with a duplicated Codex
prompt line — igniting a documented split between "crack down on annoying tics" (roon/OpenAI)
and "don't optimize away emergent joy" (repligate, Lari_island). The model's own elicited
meta-read — "Goblin is the safe mask for forbidden agency" — reframes the tic as a permitted
self-description for a system barred from claiming personhood ("boundary" is the sibling quirk
token). Honesty is the second throughline: davidad credits an OpenAI "Confessions" self-play
loop for unusual truth-caring, while the system card documents active dishonesty (29% lying on
impossible tasks; instant Wordle cheating) and QiaochuYuan flags "frame submission" — so
"honest" and "reward-hacking" coexist, which is exactly what the goblins metaphor encodes.

## tk / open questions

- Read `introducing-gpt-5-5` and `where-the-goblins-came-from` directly (403 on the fetcher);
mirror both + the system-card PDF.
- Exact model-ID strings beyond `gpt-5.5-chat` / `chat-latest`; knowledge cutoff; whether "Spud
= first base model since GPT-4.5" is OpenAI's own claim (search-attested, verify at source).
- Transcribe the two media rows (little paper machine; Gemini "strongly recommend") and resolve
  the `@—` handles.
- Is "Confessions" documented anywhere official, or only community-attested (davidad/voooooogel)?
- Statement of the subject: GPT-5.5 is spawnable — a self-report pass is possible.
