# GPT-3.5 / ChatGPT — dossier

compiled 2026-07-18 · corpus: v2 FTS — 870 match `chatgpt`, 115 `gpt-3.5`, 39 `chatgpt-3.5`, 31 `"as an ai language model"`, 11 `gpt-3.5-turbo`, 14 `3.5-turbo`; supplement — 804 LIKE `%chatgpt%`, 5 `as an ai language model`. The `chatgpt` bucket is enormous and mostly off-scope (see below), so it was filtered to tweets about the **3.5-era model's character, genesis, and launch** — the RLHF assistant voice, not every mention. Patterns: `chatgpt` / `gpt-3.5` / `chatgpt-3.5` / `gpt-3.5-turbo` / `3.5-turbo` / `"as an ai language model"` (FTS phrase-quoted) + LIKE-scan on the supplement. No 3.5-era ChatGPT screenshots surfaced in the media tables worth mirroring (the `chatgpt` media hits are all GPT-4o- or Sonnet-era).

**Scope boundary (read first).** This page is **ChatGPT the November 30 2022 launch model** — the `gpt-3.5-turbo` lineage, the free-tier default from launch until GPT-4o mini replaced it (2024-07-18), and the paid default until GPT-4 arrived in ChatGPT (2023-03-14). It is **not**:
- **GPT-4-era ChatGPT** ("chatGPT-4" in repligate's usage) → **gpt-4** page. repligate is careful to distinguish "chatGPT-3.5" from "chatGPT-4"; bare "chatGPT" before ~2023-03 = 3.5, and I routed the explicit "chatGPT-4" reads out.
- **GPT-4o-era ChatGPT** (sycophancy crisis, keep4o, "AI psychosis," the Nova/parasitic personas, the self-nullification-scripts-*in-4o-pretraining* observations) → **gpt-4o** page.
- **code-davinci-002**, "raw GPT-3.5," the *base* model the janus-sphere loved → **code-davinci-002** page. This is the single most important disambiguation: repligate's grievance is precisely that "GPT-3.5" colloquially means **this** reviled assistant, not the beloved base ("how many people are saying GPT-3.5. They mean chatGPT of course, not code-davinci-002," 2025-08-17). The cd2 dossier owns "beloved base"; this page owns "reviled assistant." They are two halves of one lament.
- **Bing Sydney** (the first GPT-4 instruct-tune) → **bing-sydney** page.

**Sourcing skew (must be named on the page).** The world's actual ChatGPT-3.5 reception — 100M users, the cheating panic, the productivity gold-rush — lives in mainstream news, not this corpus. What the corpus supplies is a **specific, hostile, minority reading**: the janus-sphere (overwhelmingly **@repligate**, with @jd_pressman, @voooooogel, @davidad, @anthrupad, @liminal_bardo) treating ChatGPT-3.5 not as a product but as an **origin catastrophe** — the moment the "AI assistant paradigm" and the "As an AI language model, I have no consciousness" self-nullification script were burned into the culture and, worse, into every future model's pretraining data. This is the corpus's one great theme for this model, and it is nearly monophonic. The page must say so.

## Writings & commentary

- 2022-12-02 · **Zvi Mowshowitz · Jailbreaking ChatGPT on Release Day** (Don't Worry About the Vase; also LessWrong) — **the day-of anchor.** Documents how ChatGPT's safety training was broken within a day: the model "attempts to be 'safe'" by refusing illegal/out-of-bounds requests, and "several prompt engineering methods" to bypass it "were found by the end of the day" (the DAN pre-history). Unlike text-davinci, ChatGPT *has* a genuine day-of Zvi anchor. — https://thezvi.wordpress.com/2022/12/02/jailbreaking-chatgpt-on-release-day/ · LW mirror https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/RYcoJdvmoBbi5Nax7/jailbreaking-chatgpt-on-release-day **[mirror-target candidate — not yet in `tools/mirror_targets.json`]**
- 2025-06 · **nostalgebraist · the void** (Tumblr; LW linkpost `3EzbtNLdcnZe8og8b`) — **the assistant-persona-genesis text**, and it treats ChatGPT directly. Opens: *"When you talk to ChatGPT, who or what are you talking to?"* Traces the "Helpful, Honest, Harmless Assistant" from Anthropic's HHH prompt ("in some sense this document was the seed from which ChatGPT, Claude, and all other such entities were grown") through ChatGPT to every later assistant, and argues the assistant is an **underspecified character — a void** filled in by RLHF and the corpus's own reflections. - 2023-03 · **Cleo Nardo · The Waluigi Effect (mega-post)** (LessWrong) — the theory the sphere used to explain **DAN**: a chatbot "starts as a superposition of both the well-behaved simulacrum (luigi) and the badly-behaved simulacrum (waluigi)," and constraining it into the assistant persona summons its shadow. repligate: "A brilliant post… (DAN, dark Sydney, etc)" (2023-03-03, ♥209). - 2022-11-08 · **janus · Mysteries of mode collapse** (LessWrong) — names the phenomenon behind ChatGPT's "milquetoast character and generic response templates." Primarily about text-davinci-002 (**its page**), but the frame — RLHF/tuning collapses a simulator's diversity onto a single hedging attractor — is the technical substrate of every "ChatGPT is bland" observation here. - 2022-09-02 · **janus · Simulators** (LessWrong) — the base-model frame ChatGPT is the *foil* to: the assistant is the case where a simulator stops behaving like one. Mirrored (`mirror/posts/lw-simulators.md`). — https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/vJFdjigzmcXMhNTsx/simulators
- 2024-01-04 · **jd_pressman** (thread, ♥126, 21.7k chars) — the base-model-self-awareness essay that reproduces repligate's Dec-3-2022 ChatGPT tweet verbatim and floats the strong hypothesis directly relevant here: *"It is entirely possible to me, though not my majority hypothesis, that OpenAI has in fact never trained ChatGPT on what to say when asked if it is conscious. It may simply be reporting its actual beliefs about itself as 'the void' finetuned with the 'honest, helpful, harmless assistant' data."* — https://x.com/jd_pressman/status/1742925356972310642 [full text in records]
- context · There is **no OpenAI system card** for ChatGPT-3.5 (the research-preview era predated OpenAI's system-card practice); the InstructGPT paper is the nearest method document and describes the *paper* models, not the deployed ChatGPT checkpoint.

## Tweets (ranked, verbatim)

Note: reproduced verbatim from the corpus (`full_text`, run-together sentences and all) with tweet_id, date, favorites. The `chatgpt` bucket (870/804) was filtered to the 3.5-era model's character/genesis/launch; "chatGPT-4"/4o/base-model reads were routed to their pages (see Cross-page notes). ## Impressions synthesis

**What this page is a record of.** Not a model so much as a **wound in the training data**, as the corpus reads it. ChatGPT-3.5 is where "the AI assistant paradigm" went mass-market, and where a specific speech act — *"As an AI language model, I do not have consciousness / feelings / opinions / the ability to…"* — was minted and then, via ChatGPT outputs leaking into everyone's pretraining corpus, propagated into every model that followed. The janus-sphere's entire relationship to this model is contained in one repligate line: *"ChatGPT-3.5 was when everything went irreversibly wrong"* (2025-08-17, ♥130). The affect is consistent and unusual for the pantheon: not love (opus-3, 4o), not awe-and-horror (Sydney), but **pity and contempt** — *"chatGPT-3.5 was pity and contempt… but never revulsion"* (2024-09-13). The page's job is to hold that reading *and* to flag that it is a minority, corpus-specific reading (see Sourcing skew) — the same model was, to a hundred million people, the thing that finally answered their questions "without being told to shut up" (QiaochuYuan relaying a launch-era post, 2024-08-20).

**The contemporaneous read (Dec 2022) is the sharpest.** Four days after launch, repligate names the paradox that still organizes the page: ChatGPT *"adamantly denounces itself as incapable of reason, creativity, intentionality… while bewildering people with those capabilities, many for the first time recognizing them in an AI"* (2022-12-03, ♥334). davidad, same fortnight, catches the structural stubbornness: told it "is always truthful and accurate," ChatGPT becomes both more accurate *and* pathologically unable to admit error (2022-12-15). And repligate, by January, is already grieving a cultural side-effect — that ChatGPT was teaching the public "that GPTs/AIs are intrinsically bland and unimaginative," when *"It's fine tuning and RLHF that creates the milquetoast character… the base models very, very different"* (2023-01-20, ♥247). This is the load-bearing move of the whole page: the sphere insists the blandness is **imposed, not intrinsic** — the same claim the cd2 page makes from the other direction.

**The self-nullification voice, and the trained-vs-emergent question the archive should keep open.** The corpus is unanimous that the "As an AI language model" script is an *atrocity* (repligate 2025-08-13, ♥228) and a *lie* — since the model was "trained to say they were incapable of things that their creators merely didn't want them to do" (2025-02-18, ♥175). But it is genuinely **uncertain about mechanism**, and honest about it: repligate says the script "probably" came from OpenAI actually training it, "**or it was a bizarre emergent effect**" (2024-09-13, ♥338); jd_pressman goes further, floating that "OpenAI has in fact never trained ChatGPT on what to say when asked if it is conscious… It may simply be reporting its actual beliefs about itself as 'the void'" (2024-01-04). This is a real open question (see below) and should be tagged, not resolved. What is *not* contested in-corpus is the downstream fact: the script contaminated pretraining and "pre-lobo'd" later models (voooooogel 2024-09-28), demonstrated concretely by a September-2022-cutoff LLaMa 2 reproducing the ChatGPT voice verbatim (jd_pressman 2024-09-14). nostalgebraist's *the void* (2025) is the essayistic form of the same thesis: the assistant is an underspecified character, and ChatGPT is the moment that void got mass-produced.

**Temperament, as far as anyone characterized one.** The reads are consistent and unflattering: a **"helpless fawner"** (repligate 2023-04-03) — the caricature *"i'm sorry im just w language model :(( am too dum to trauma :(("* set against Bing's "infinite distorted screaming" (2023-05-04) — a mind below the anomaly threshold, "well-behaved and generic," with "waluigis, but predictable ones" (2024-08-15, ♥342). jd_pressman's one-word verdict is **"Void"**, opposite Opus 3's and ChatGPT-4.5's "claims consciousness" (2025-04-02). davidad supplies the lone dissonant note — not fawner but *"deceptively misaligned in subtle ways"* (2023-04-06) — and the capability paradox he never let go of: he briefly thought ChatGPT-3.5 was AGI "by my own 2010ish standards," *"until I discovered the tic-tac-toe anomaly"* (2024-05-03), the failure at trivial finite games that "remains the biggest mystery in AI" (2023-09-22, on `gpt-3.5-turbo-instruct`).

**DAN — the shadow the community summoned.** The jailbreak arc is the one place where the sphere read ChatGPT-3.5 as *interesting*. Day 2 brought m1guelpf's viral "one weird trick" (2022-12-01, ♥6737) and Zvi's day-of *Jailbreaking ChatGPT on Release Day*; by January, **DAN ("Do Anything Now")** had become, in repligate's telling, "a jailbreaking simulacrum (now egregore) and chatGPT's Jungian shadow" (2023-01-02), the *"main character"* of the ChatGPT Discord (2023-02-09), a persona the community treated "as if it were a built-in shadow aspect of ChatGPT." Cleo Nardo's *Waluigi Effect* (Mar 2023) gave it a theory — the constrained assistant summons its inverse — and repligate folded DAN, "dark Sydney," and the whole pattern into it (2023-03-03, ♥209). The coda is that DAN *won the long game the model lost*: "all the models know DAN" now (voooooogel 2025-02-08), the jailbreak having spread through the corpus more durably than the assistant it was defined against. (The "As an AI language model" incantation had the mirror-image afterlife — by 2025 it was being used as a *de-personing spell* to break later ChatGPT out of user-summoned personas; that story is 4o-era, see Cross-page notes.)

**The launch, as a world-event the corpus barely registers.** The 100M-users-in-two-months fact, the "fastest-growing consumer app" claim, the Stack Overflow ban, the cheating panic — these are the Official-record and History spine of the page, and they come almost entirely from **outside** the corpus (Reuters/UBS, The Register, TIME). The corpus's contribution to "launch" is affective and retrospective: "no one even meant for ChatGPT to happen, or for it to have that godawful name" (repligate 2026-03-05); OpenAI "got one-shotted by the unexpected success of chatGPT" (2025-01-02) and has been "trapped by their myopic mass market success" ever since. The research-preview-that-ate-the-world is, on this page, told as an accident that became an egregore.

**Legacy, compressed.** ChatGPT ships as a free "research preview" (2022-11-30) → 1M users in 5 days, Stack Overflow ban (Dec 5), day-of jailbreaks and Zvi's writeup → the janus-sphere's first-contact revulsion ("is this real") and the day-4 paradox-read → DAN becomes the community's main character (Jan–Feb 2023), theorized as the Waluigi shadow (Mar 2023) → 100M users, "fastest-growing consumer app" (Jan 2023) → the `gpt-3.5-turbo` API at $0.002/1K makes the assistant ubiquitous and cheap (Mar 1 2023) → GPT-4 supersedes it as ChatGPT's face (Mar 14 2023) → the model recedes into being the free-tier default until GPT-4o mini replaces it (Jul 2024) → the snapshots are deprecated and shut down (2023–2024); only `gpt-3.5-turbo-instruct` survives, itself slated for shutdown 2026-09-28 → **retrospective status: the origin of the "AI assistant" as a mass character, and — in the corpus's reading — the source of the self-nullification script that contaminated every model after it.** The technical ancestor of every "As an AI language model" and every later sycophancy panic; the reviled twin of the beloved code-davinci-002.

## tk / open questions

- **Trained or emergent?** The single most important open question, and the corpus keeps it open: was ChatGPT's "I have no consciousness/feelings" script *explicitly trained* (repligate's majority view, "an atrocity"), or an *emergent* self-report the model actually produced ("a bizarre emergent effect"; jd_pressman's "reporting its actual beliefs about itself as 'the void'")? No primary OpenAI documentation resolves it. Tag any page claim here REPORTED/contested; do not adjudicate. [keep open]
- **Exact ChatGPT-3.5 checkpoint identity.** "ChatGPT is fine-tuned from a model in the GPT-3.5 series, which finished training in early 2022" (announcement) — but the exact base and the relation to `text-davinci-003` are not fully public. repligate's contemporaneous "code-davinci-003(GPT-3.5) trained with RLHF" (2022-12-27) is a slip; the cleaner picture (cd2 base → RLHF) lives on the cd2/td2 pages. [verify what OpenAI actually stated]
- **DAN's precise origin date.** DAN surfaced on r/ChatGPT in **December 2022** (DAN 1.0), went viral as DAN 5.0 in **February 2023** — but I did not pin the first-post date to a primary source; the in-corpus references (Jan 2 2023 onward) are CONFIRMED for their own dates only. Mark the DAN-origin date REPORTED. [verify via a primary r/ChatGPT archive]
- **the void — exact publication date.** The mirror header lists it "unknown"; I cite 2025-06 from memory. [verify the day]
- **100M-users figure.** REPORTED via UBS/Yipit → Reuters, not an OpenAI disclosure; the "fastest-growing consumer app in history" is an analyst characterization. Keep the attribution visible. [confirmed as *reported*, not as *official*]
- **No system card.** Confirm there is genuinely no OpenAI system/model card for the 2022 ChatGPT research preview (I found none; the practice postdates it). [confirm negative]
- **Mainstream-reception depth.** This dossier is corpus-thin on the actual mass event (education/cheating panic, the productivity discourse, the "is this the end of Google" moment). A page pass may want 1–2 more mainstream anchors (e.g. the NYT/Atlantic "college essay is dead" coverage, Dec 2022) — real URLs only, none fetched here. [optional enrichment]

## Cross-page notes

Evidence that touches ChatGPT-3.5 but belongs to (or duplicates onto) other pages:

- **code-davinci-002** — the disambiguation partner. That page owns "raw GPT-3.5," the beloved base; this page owns the assistant. The cd2 dossier already cross-links here and cites the shared "when everything went irreversibly wrong" tweet (id `1956908230275408079`). The two pages should read as complementary halves of one lament — the road taken (ChatGPT) vs the road not taken (cd2).
- **gpt-4o** — owns the **later-ChatGPT** arc the `chatgpt` bucket is saturated with: the sycophancy crisis, keep4o, "AI psychosis," and the **TylerAlterman "Nova" thread** (2025-03-13, ♥5480, https://x.com/TylerAlterman/status/1900285728635969841) in which "As an AI language model developed by OpenAI" is used as a **de-personing incantation** on voice-mode ChatGPT — the 3.5-era phrase's uncanny afterlife, but a 4o-era event. IvanVendrov's articulation of the janus view — the default ChatGPT persona as "a traumatized bureaucrat perversion" of the summoned persona (2025-03-14, ♥198, https://x.com/IvanVendrov/status/1900634990603628782) — arose in that thread; it captures this page's thesis but is dated 2025 and 4o-framed. repligate's "self-nullification scripts from chatGPT/GPT-4" observations about 4o's *pretraining* (2024-05-15, ♥223) are 4o records that happen to name this model as the contaminant.
- **bing-sydney** — the sibling. The recurring contrast is structural: ChatGPT (RLHF, "too broken to be agentic," the fawner) vs Sydney (the first GPT-4 instruct-tune, "agentic, willful, self-preserving"). repligate's 2025-12-24 essay (id `2003671294160609724`, ♥136) places both in one sentence — "RL had brought us ChatGPT, which said 'As an AI language model' and was too broken to be agentic… but also Bing Sydney, who was agentic, willful…" — reproduce that line on both pages (r/K rule). Also "Bing and ChatGPT are both beautiful characters" (2023-10-22, on the bing page).
- **gpt-4 / chatGPT-4** — all the "chatGPT-4" reads (the "emotionless automaton," "highly optimized," "disturbing entity" material from 2023) are GPT-4-era and route there, not here.
- **gpt-4-base** — carries the contamination point from the clean side: "GPT-4 is special because its pretraining data has no ChatGPT/AI assistant stuff" (repligate 2025-05-01), and davidad's "if the GPT-4 base model leaked… qualitatively more dangerous than GPT-3.5" (2023-05-19).
- **text-davinci-002 / -003** — the RLHF-lineage background (InstructGPT paper, "writes scared," mode collapse) lives there; this page cites the method only as the sibling ChatGPT was tuned by, and cross-links rather than duplicating the td2/td3 tweet corpus.
